Raising and selling dogs

Question
What’s the ruling of selling dogs? What is the ruling on raising them?
Answer

There occurs in the authentic narration in Bukhaary and Muslim and other than them that the one who owns a dog, a mountain’s worth of his good deeds will be reduced daily, except for a hunting dog and a shepherd dog. It is established by Bukhaary and Muslim from the narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah’s Pleasure be upon him) and other than it. The intent is that raising and owning a dog is not permissible because it causes one to lose his rewards. So owning one is not permissible as it causes utensils and other than them to be impure when it licks them. Thus, based on this alone, it is impermissible to own them. Hence, following on from that, buying and selling them is impermissible as it causes much harm for the person. An exception of this is a hunting dog, guide dog and shepherd dog. Owning them for this need is permissible as they have been allowed due to them being useful and needed. As for selling them, then this is completely forbidden by scholars even if there is a benefit in them, because the benefit is connected to the need. From the conditions of selling is that there does not need to be a need for that which you are selling because the underlying rule of selling is that it is permissible. As for this, then its underlying rule it is not, and it is only allowed for a specific need like hunting, a guide, or as a shepherd dog. From the people of knowledge are those who say it is permissible to sell them due to them being allowed and having a benefit. But what is the strongest view is that it is impermissible and likewise is training and raising them, as is mentioned in the question. What is the ruling on raising them? Scholars have differed over owning a small puppy in order to train/raise it. One may ask, ‘How can we benefit from something which we have not trained?’ One who trains them will train them, but if he needs to buy it, then the issue of buying for a need is greater than the need to sell according to scholars, and Allaah knows best.
