Leading the prayer and prayer in congregation: The prayer of a man at home and abandoning the congregation due to laziness

Question
I am a man who has become lazy with regards to praying in congregation in the mosque. I now prefer to pray at home and by Allaah I am astonished at my condition and do not know how I came to be like this. Please benefit me, may Allaah reward you.
Answer

The origin with regards to responsible adult men is that they pray the five prayers whenever the mosques give the call to prayer. The blind man, Ibn um Maktoom (may Allaah’s Pleasure be upon him) came to the Prophet ﷺ in order for him to give him permission to pray at home, to which the Prophet ﷺ agreed. Then the Prophet ﷺ asked,

“Do you hear the call to prayer?”

The man replied, ‘Yes!’ The Prophet ﷺ then said,

Then answer it!” Muslim (653)

In the wording of Abu Daawood (552),

“I do not find an excuse for you!”

Likewise, in the hadeeth of Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah’s Pleasure be upon him),

“Wherever they are called to.”

Where are they called to? To the mosques, so it is a must to pray in the mosque and it is not permissible to destroy this connection with the mosques and it is not permissible for a Muslim to pray at home except for a valid excuse. He says, ‘I have become lazy.’ This is not an excuse and he must overpower this laziness and ponder over the texts with regards to prayer in congregation and prayer in the mosque. The Prophet ﷺ considered burning the houses of those who do not pray in the mosques. This indicates that this is not a light affair because burning them with fire shows the magnitude of this affair. Thus, let him rid himself of this laziness and think about these serious texts and the great reward from Allaah the Mighty and Majestic and safeguard these five prayers and prays them in the mosque whenever they are called for, and Allaah’s Aid is sought!
