The difference between asceticism and precaution?

Question
What is the difference between asceticism and precaution?
Answer

Ibn Al-Qayyim reports from Shaykh Al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah’s Mercy be upon them both) in his book Madaarij AS-Saalikeen that “Asceticism is to leave that which does not benefit you in the Hereafter and take precaution in leaving that which you fear may harm you in the Hereafter.” Ibn Al-Qayyim says, “This is the best and most comprehensive statement made about asceticism and precaution.” It is said that asceticism considers what you have in your hands and precaution is avoiding it falling into your hands, but if it falls into your hands and you are certain it is permissible without the slightest doubt, then to still leave it, disposing of it in a way best pleasing to Allaah, Most Exalted and High.
