Question
Matters regarding faith: Experiencing whispers regarding articles of belief and its cure
Answer

Whispers of this kind, if it remains in the heart and a person does not speak about it, then there is no harm, Allaah-willing. This is because it is considered as ‘internal conversation’ and internal conversation is pardoned. Some of the Prophet’s companions also experienced these whispers which were enormous in gravity, so much so that they could not talk about it and so they sought the counsel of the Prophet ﷺ and he told them,

This is clear faith!” (Muslim 132)

This is because what has prevented them from speaking about it was faith, and the power of faith resides in the heart. However, a person must strive earnestly to repel and expel these thoughts and replace it with thoughts which are better for his faith and his worldly life. He should not spend time thinking and pondering over these issues; rather, he should turn away from these thoughts and remember Allaah and seek refuge in Him from Satan. This is how he will rid himself of such whispers and thoughts. There is no doubt that the heart is like a sack. If it is filled with the remembrance of Allaah and pondering about the miracles of Allaah and about His creation and pondering over His signs which can be read or seen, then these thoughts and whispers will be removed. This is what Ibn al-Qayyim (May Allaah’s mercy be upon him) said in his book Al-Jawaab Al-Kaafyy, ‘The Sufficient Response,’ as well as other books, ‘If the heart of the son of Aadam is busy with the remembrance of Allaah, reflection over his miracles and signs, and engaged in remembering Allaah and thanking Him, then these thoughts will be removed from his heart’.
